The 5 Best Tech Reads on The Net

25 September 2014
Information overload. Choosing what to pay attention to.

The places you ought to go to get your dose of technology development news

We've already told you about our [five favourite tech blogs on the net]. Now we'd like to share some of the online publications that we regularly dip into to keep up with the Wonderful World of Technology.

Coming in at number one...

    1. CNet [www.cnet.com]. We couldn't really put anyone else at the top. This is our go-to site for mainstream technology news. Although they have a consumer technology mandate, they often reach further into the news to report anything remotely related to technology. We find it's a good way to watch for trends within a range of tech industries. Nice example: Apple: Only Nine Customers Have Complained About Bendgate.
    2. The Unofficial Apple Weblog [www.tuaw.com]. If you're an Apple fan, it's handy to have an unofficial spot to hang out... and maybe find a few fixes now and then. The Unofficial Apple Weblog is a good resource for patches and other tips. The owners also review new Apple tech pretty much as soon as it's remotely available, meaning you've got genuine user experience as quickly as it's possible to get it. Nice example: Three days with the iPhone 6 Plus.
    3. Tech Radar [www.techradar.com]. We always find ourselves on this page when new technology is being discussed. These guys are one of the most reliable sources for tech reviews. If nothing else, they are comprehensive in their coverage. They also update their reviews when they can, which is more than most publications are willing to do.Nice example: Best laptop 2014: Which notebook should you buy?
    4. All Tech Flix [www.alltechflix.com]. These guys run a site that is home to several writers but has the feel of a personal blog. This is their Android-centric blog, and they also run one for Apple fans. The range of content runs from basic how-to pieces to industry analyses, and we've found that the combination makes it an interesting read. Nice example: 'How to get instantly notified when an app goes free (No longrer available)

Bonus: EnGadget and Forever Geek

These two are really more for fun than anything, but they both had to go on the list somewhere.

EnGadget [www.engadget.com]. EnGadget is our favourite spot for all things gadgety. This article about robot cheerleaders is a fine example of the sort of content on offer. They do tend towards the serious every so often, and it's worth keeping an eye on their feed for tech news.

Forever Geek [www.forevergeek.com]. Forever Geek is a similarly fun site, although a little lighter in terms of content. Perfect for a casual trawl on a Friday afternoon. Nice example: this article about the trend toward horror games in the PC gaming industry.
